Unlock the future of public transit: How Stop Details and Running Times are boosting network performance in Mosaiq Insights

If you're in the public transit game, you know that keeping services running smoothly is no small feat. But what if there was a way to pinpoint exactly where delays or inefficiencies are happening, down to the very route segment between two timing points? That's exactly what we’re bringing to the table with two new features—Stop Details and Running Times—now available in Mosaiq Insights.

These powerful features offer a fresh way to manage transit performance. Rather than just tracking overall On-Time Performance, Running Times and Stop Details provide operators with a detailed, stop-by-stop breakdown of how services are running. It's like giving operators and authorities a magnifying glass to zoom in on exactly where things are working well—and where they’re not.

Discover the power of Stop Details and Running Times

Stop Details gives you an in-depth look at how each individual bus stop is performing. Want to know if the 8am service consistently arrives late at a particular stop? Or on a particular day? Or if a service has irregular gaps between buses? You can now dive into these specifics with a level of detail that wasn't possible before. The feature provides insights into:

  • Scheduled vs. Actual Times: See how the actual arrival and departure times stack up against what's planned.
  • Headway and Dwell Time: Get granular details on how buses are spacing out, how long they’re stopped, and any timing discrepancies that might lead to inefficiencies.
  • Route-Wide Insights: Navigate easily to neighbouring stops for a broader view of what's happening across the entire route.

On the other hand, Running Times lets you track how long buses are actually taking to travel between stops. This can highlight whether a bus is running behind schedule, if the allocated schedule time is too tight, or if traffic issues are causing delays. The best part? You can track these trends over time, so if a certain bus service or time of day always seems to take longer, you can identify patterns and easily make incremental adjustments.

How to use the Stop Details feature in Mosaiq Insights

Accessing the Stop Details screen in Mosaiq Insights is simple and flexible. You can reach it from multiple points within the platform, just look for anywhere you see a stop name in Mosaiq Insights and click on it to get into the detail.

Once you select a stop, you’ll see an interactive side panel that gives you a lot of useful information, including:

  • Stop Name, ID, and Location.
  • A map showing the precise location of the Stop.
  • Stop Information including geographic coordinates, platform codes, and even details like whether the stop is wheelchair accessible.
  • Services at this stop and how they’re performing.

The Stop Details Table gives you a deeper look at how each visit is performing, showing:

  • Journey Status.
  • Scheduled and Actual Times.
  • On-Time Performance: This shows if the vehicle was Early, On Time, or Late at the stop.
  • Running Times: Get insights into the travel time between stops, or timing points, including dwell time (the time spent at the stop).
  • Gap and Headway: This lets you check the time interval between visits and the headways for the same service.

You can also click on any visit to explore more, including previous and next stops for that journey, Running Times and service information and gain more specific journey and vehicle data to understand the bigger picture.

Finally, need to dive even deeper still? Export to combine the data with other datasets as you need to.

How to use the Running Times feature in Mosaiq Insights

To get started with the Running Times feature, simply navigate to the Running Times screen from one of several locations. Either select the date you're interested in from the Journeys screen, access it through the sidebar in Service Details to dive deeper into service performance, or click the dropdown menu next to a specific visit in Stop Details to view the running times for that stop.

Once you’re in the Running Times view, you’ll be able to see each stop along the journey. The timeline shows all the timing points, from the first stop to the last, and includes:

  • Scheduled running, including times between stops or timing points.
  • Actual times when the vehicle arrived or departed.
  • Delta-the difference between the scheduled and actual times.
  • Dwell-the time spent at each stop within a segment.

To get more specific data, use the Filters option to tailor the view. You can select between:

  • Inbound or Outbound journeys.
  • Variants of the route if applicable.
  • Timing points or All Stops view for a more granular look at each segment of the journey.

Note that when selecting ‘All stops’, the last stop will not show dwell time, as it is only calculated for stops in the middle of the journey.

The Running Times view provides several columns that will help you analyse performance including:

  • Scheduled vs. Actual Times: Identify where discrepancies are occurring.
  • Delta: This column shows the time difference between the scheduled and actual times for each segment.
  • Dwell Time: See how long the vehicle is stationary at each stop (measured from arrival to departure).

Why Running Times and Stop Details matter: Actionable insights for a more efficient network

The beauty of Running Times and Stop Details is how they empower you with actionable data. For example, instead of wondering why a bus route is delayed, you can pinpoint:

  • Potential traffic hotspots.
  • Problem areas where buses are frequently delayed.
  • Peak hours when certain routes need more resources to keep things running smoothly.
  • Parts of your schedule where you can make easy adjustments to reflect actual performance of the network.

And the benefits don’t stop there. Transit authorities and operators can use this data to adjust schedules, allocate resources more effectively, and resolve issues faster. The goal? To create a more reliable, efficient public transport system that improves the passenger experience.
